Our Missions Philosophy

We believe the mission of the Great Commission (Matt 28:18-20) is the responsibility of the local church and as such we take responsibility for local, regional and cross cultural missions.

Our mission statement “Taking the kingdom of God to the Marketplace” is a statement of our commitment to missions.

Our first priority in missions begins with the local community.  Local missions are often the toughest to undertake and yet when Jesus instructed his disciples regarding missions He was clear in His priorities –

Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Local Missions

Adelaide is our “Jerusalem“.  Southland Church is committed to engaging the local community.  Our location in a busy suburban shopping centre is no accident; we are l0cated in the heart of the marketplace as an intentional means of bringing direct interaction between church and marketplace.

Our people are well trained in confrontational evangelism and ministry to the un-churched.  We train our people in praying for the un-churched for healing and we take large teams of people into events such as the annual Adelaide Body, Mind and Psychic Expo where we minister in the power gifts; healing, words of knowledge, prophecy, etc. and proclaim Jesus as King and Saviour.

We also host special events aimed at helping the local community understand Jesus and and His kingdom.  Outreaches into the mall such as Christmas carols, relationships with local businesses in the mall and our own church events are all part of our local missions strategy.  More-than-a-meal is a free community meal we put on in our Cafe fortnightly on Thursdays to engage with people in our locality; these meals are provided to build bridges to people we might otherwise not meet.

Trans-Local Missions

As we go to “Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” we will always have a direct participation and responsibility for support – financially, with human resources and with prayer.

Southland Church in partnership with SIM has “sent” Andy and Mardi Steere and their children to Kenya as cross cultural missionaries to that nation.  Based in Kijabe, 50 km North-West of Niarobi, The Steeres are working with local Kenyans to bring health care and water sanitation to that community.

Mardi is Medical Director of the Kijabe Hospital and Andy is involved in water sanitation projects and also teaches at the Moffat Bible College.  Please check out their work on their website/blog which is full of up-to-date information and updates on this exciting missions venture at

Missions Trips

In addition to sending cross cultural missionaries for long term support we also take teams on various short term missions.  Southland Church takes a team every eighteen months to the Chang Rai province in Northern Thailand to work with the Akha Evangelical Church and their Mae Chan Children’s home.  Southland volunteers have been involved in building children’s dormitories and financially supporting various building project at the Mae Chan Children’s Home.
