What’s In A Name?

On the 14 May 1606 Captain Pedro Fernandez De Quiros declared this continent as ‘La Australia del Espiritu Santo’ or translated to English, which means the ‘Great Southland of the Holy Spirit’. In his eyes all men were the adopted children of God and he began to believe that he had been singled out by God where through him the inhabitants of ‘Terra Australis’ would be received into the church and that ‘Terra Australis’ would be Australia Del Espiritu Santo – a land dedicated to the Holy Spirit.

Although not quite reaching Australia but instead landing on the largest island in what was later known as the New Hebrides group he made his declaration stating:

“Let the heavens, the earth, the waters with all their creatures and all those here present witness that I, Captain Pedro Fernandez de Quiros…in the name of Jesus Christ… hoist this emblem of the Holy Cross on which His (Jesus Christ’s ) person was crucified and whereon He gave His life for the ransom and remedy of all the human race… on this Day of Pentecost, 14 May 1606… I, take possession of all this part of the South as far as the pole in the name of Jesus… Which from now on shall be called the Southern land of the Holy Ghost… and this always and forever… and to the end that to all natives, in all the said lands, the holy and sacred evangel may be preached zealously and openly.”

“Southland”

is a name that is a prophetic reminder of the declaration made by De Quiros. Southland Church was born out of a desire for the sacred evangel, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to be preached and demonstrated freely in our land and to walk in the inheritance of this great declaration.
